Solo Exhibition
Lola Álvarez
Lola Álvarez, the Swiss-born artist with deep Spanish roots, is set to unveil her highly anticipated exhibition, Tin Is My Type, at Photo London this May. An expert of
the 19th-century tintype photography technique, Álvarez’s work is renowned for its raw beauty and tactile intimacy. Her tintypes, with their unpredictable
imperfections and luminous depth, challenge the sleek perfection of modern digital photography. Álvarez’s compositions evoke a timeless aesthetic, blending
portraits, horses, and natural elements with an unmistakable Mediterranean sensibility that whispers of sun-soaked afternoons and wild, windswept
landscapes.
The new exhibition is brought to life through a collaboration with Julia Campbell Carter, the renowned gallerist and art consultant behind Brompton Art Limited. Campbell Carter is celebrated for her ability to identify emerging talent and dedication to supporting artists. “I am thrilled to bring Tin Is My Type to Photo London,” says Campbell Carter. “Lola’s work isn’t just about photography; it’s about capturing essence. Her portraits, studies of horses, and natural compositions feel timeless, intimate, and personal.”
Álvarez and Campbell Carter’s partnership is deeply rooted in a shared passion for art and a profound respect for one another’s creative vision. Their collaboration traces back to a serendipitous meeting on a Mediterranean island over a decade ago, which
blossomed into a lasting friendship fuelled by a shared passion for art. This exhibition marks a culmination of their artistic journey, as they co-curate a compelling narrative that highlights Álvarez’s unique creative vision.
Tin Is My Type will feature a selection of Álvarez’s powerful portraits which explore the symbiotic relationship between humans, animals, and the land. Her equine studies showcase horses as majestic, yet vulnerable creatures, embodying grace, freedom, and strength. Nature plays a central role in her work, with Mediterranean flora weaving into the compositions to evoke nostalgia and timeless beauty.
Reflecting on her work, Álvarez reveals, “There’s something magical about working with tintype. It slows you down, demands presence, and embraces imperfection. It’s like the Mediterranean itself; wild, beautiful, and a little unpredictable. Capturing horses with this method feels like honouring their untamed spirit.”
Together, Álvarez and Campbell Carter have curated an exhibition that carefully weaves art, nature and tradition together. Their journey from a sunlit Mediterranean
island to the prestigious halls of Photo London stands as a testament to the power of creative collaboration and enduring friendship.
Cambell Carter adds; “Álvarez’s tintypes are more than just images, they’re windows into a world where time slows down, beauty flourishes, and stories linger long after the final exposure. They celebrate the elegance of horses, the quiet strength of nature, and the timeless allure of art shaped by patience and passion.”
